Fix all test failures on Windows

Description

We should make sure that things build on Windows, too (some developers prefer that platform).

This is related to ticket #1635, but is not limited to the updater test failures.

Fixed in the commits leading up to b2d9a17f1f7998dd4c81e9b62e5c0ddb010d4ed2.
