Test axis subrange edge cases

Description

I have an old note saying it is now possible to define empty axis subranges. Test if this is indeed the case by code inspection of the classes related to the SamplerService and by playing with the DuplicatePlugin.

Perhaps defining an axis subrange entirely outside the image could make an empty subrange.
